1st Writing Assignment, Due Mon., Sept. 14th

For your first assignment in this class, I’d like for you to compose a 2-4 page essay in which you reflect upon an experience or condition that has caused you to feel imprisoned, leading toward a revelation of the strategies you employed in order to escape or reconcile these feelings.

You may also choose to write about situations of imprisonment that you have observed through family, friends, literature, or the news.

This assignment allows you to personally engage the themes of the course before the literature focuses our thinking. Furthermore, it offers you the opportunity to express yourself in writing as you begin your Senior year.

Although this assignment does not constitute a formal/analytical essay, your paper should still contain the elements of strong writing, including active verbs, transitions which guide the ideas from one paragraph to the next, and specificity of language.
