Sexism
After reading about many of Ignatius' encounters with other people, I think that there Ignatius is sexist. When he's walking through Pirate's Alley, Ignatius trashes the women's art. When Ignatius writes to Myrna, he writes about how stupid she is and how he doesn't want her help. Ignatius also hates his mother's new friends and wants her to stay in the house. I think this all leads to my theory that Ignatius is sexist. Ignatius is threatened by women who are more successful than he is in any way-his mother is more social than he is, Myrna is more well-known, and the artists in the alley are more talented. On the other hand, Ignatius admires Miss Trixie, because all she does is work for very little pay. What do you people think?

Building on your question, I wonder if Ignatius is attracted primarily to the book or the nudity in the schoolteacher photo. In other words, is he objectifying her?
ReplyDeleteAlso, he seems to condemn the female actresses in the movies he sees much more vociferously than he does the actors.
